Me, My Dog and Her Cancer
In 2023 my English Show Cocker Spaniel, Amber, was diagnosed with liver cancer. In this surprisingly uplifting film I vlog my way through the journey from the intial diagnosis, through treatment and recovery.
Dogs take a very special place in so many families and hopefully Amber's place in our hearts shines through this film from start to finish.

EV Motorway vs Town Driving plus EV Stand Up Routine #comedy #electriccar
Переглядів 3,1 тис.Місяць тому
Most of the time I drive my electric car round town and on country roads. I rarely go on the motorway. Recently I had to travel some distance to attend a meeting and this would involve quite a bit of time on motorways so I thought it would be a great opportunity to see how that would impact the efficiency of my vehicle. I've had has high as 6.9 miles per kWh, although that's the exception rathe...
Why Your Next Car Should Be Electric! #electriccar

I've been an EV owner since December 2022 and am so pleased I decided to skip hybrid altogether and go straight from a fully petrol powered vehicle to a fully electric one. In 2024 I believe that this option is by far the best one for the majority of drivers - even those who always purchase second hand. In this video I explain why I think that and tackle the main arguments against going EV head...
Making Green Plans - Getting rid of gas. Getting more solar. And a walk round my lounge and kitchen
Переглядів 3903 місяці тому
This is the first video in a new series... if all goes according to plan. I've been making myself greener for some time now (in an environmental sense, not actually painting myself green, that would be silly). In this video I talk about how I want to take that to the next level. I cover solar, batteries and getting the gas cut off amongst other things. Solar is a no-brainer, however adding a ba...

      I find it very comfortable. The ride is quite hard, I'd say rather than soft and squashy and sadly you can't adjust it as you can in some other vehicles. But don't take that necessarily as a negative, I've had some long journeys with the vehicle and have felt more refreshed afterwards than I ever did in a petrol car. Hope that helps!

    Since 2005 a gas boiler will virtually never poison anyone with carbon monoxide if the front cover is suitablely in place and checked annually as recommended! They are room sealed appliances now!!! I do suggest you investigate the battery route with solar panels, and I am not talking about 1 or 2 batteries, its whatever suits a property for winter demand that is important! In winter a system can draw power from a panel or battery or both b4 turning to the national grid for your power! I know of a system whereby the battery backup supports the whole property throughout the year and requires no power from the grid! Remember panels now are cheaper and more efficient just needing daylight. It's the way to GO!!

  • @kevinw7419
    @kevinw7419 27 днів тому

    Best here the views from people that have them and are disappointed to get an overall opinion. If your home is old, inefficient, then you may want to forget the idea of a costly heat pump. They can be very noisy especially after a few years old and a lot of the time you have to up grade your radiators to get rooms up to a decent temperature. Why isn't everyone jumping onboard to get a heat pump well in my opinion its for only a few more modern energy efficient dwellings. It can be an expensive mistake, for me the solar route is the obvious choice with producing all your own energy linked to adequate storage with an electic boiler that has far less to go wrong. We only need daylight now for solar gain and battery charging, so the potential to work well is up there to challenge heat pumps into 2nd place!!

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel 26 днів тому

      Once again a misundersanding of how heat pumps work. My home was built in 1950. A heat pump will not be noisy and regular servicing will keep it running optimally - it's no different to a gas boiler there (although it won't poison you like a gas boiler potenitally could). I'm a big fan of solar and have panels myself, however heating tends to be required in the winter months when the sun doesn't shine quite so much. Use of a battery is fine (and I'm investigating this myself) however the capacity of a battery will unlikely to be enough to power an electric boiler all day so you'll still end up pulling power from the grid. A heat pump won't be for everyone, however my experience in an older house with modest (and pretty ancient) insulation has been very positive. And trust me, I looked at all the green options before deciding an ASHP was for me. So HEAR the view from someone who has had one for nearly 2 years. They're great!

    I don't think you can criticize the weight of the Land Rover .. the Nissan can't do any off road work nor any decent towing... The Nissan weighs around 2200kg depending on the model.... So not a light weight but has no SUV 4wd benefits..

    • @TheRamblyChannel

      My Ariya weighs 1,900 Kg. I'm yet to meet anyone who drives a Land Rover/Range Rover who has done any off roading. The nearest they get to going off road is parking on the verge when they collect their child from school in their enormous, over sized, heavy, child killing, poison wagon.

  • @kevinw7419
    @kevinw7419 Місяць тому

    Malcolm's comments are correct, the colder it gets heat pumps struggle!! Plus they are too expensive to have installeded! Solar panels with battery storage linked to an electric Boiler is a far better option!!

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel 27 днів тому

      Do you have an ASHP? From your post that appears to be churning out what the newspapers like to print about the technology, I doubt it. Take it from someone who actually has one in their home - it doesn't struggle in the cold! It's been -10 degrees here and my heat pump coped with it just fine. They have flipping thousands of the things in Norway, and guess how cold it gets there? Installation costs are falling all the time and it's easily possible to get an install on cost parity with a gas boiler. If I factor in the running costs of my unit then even though it cost me more to install at that time (nearly 2 years ago) than if I'd gone with a poisoning fossil fuel gas boiler, I still anticipate it will cost far less to run over the coming years... and that has proved to be the case so far since installation. Your electric boiler/solar suggestion is valid, however there's a balance to be made and I'm not convinced the savings of a solution like that would be as much as my heat pump, however as with everything YMMV and any option that doesn't use fossil fuels is a good one.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      I did mention boiler efficiency. Mine had dropped below 90% (estimated 85%) however your figure of 90% for new installations doesn't take into account the huge inefficiences further up the supply chain. Once you factor that in, efficiency falls off a cliff. Then look at a typical heat pump where the efficiency will run into many hundreds of percent. There's no comparison, frankly. For the record, I've saved a fortune after switching my home heating from gas to a renewables (ASHP in my case).

      It was an "efficient" condensing boiler. Mine had dropped below 90% (estimated 85%). Modern boilers claim 90% for new installations but that doesn't take into account the huge inefficiences further up the supply chain. Once you factor that in, gas boiler efficiency falls off a cliff. And you're paying for all of those losses. A typical heat pump has efficiency running into many hundreds of percent. There's no comparison, frankly.

      It's not something I've tried! To be honest, that's down to your hot water system and not specifically the heat pump. One of my complaints about the Ariya is the lack of bi-directional support however you've hit the nail on the head - the infrastructure for it isn't quite ready yet and I suspect that's why Nissan left it out. I'm having second thoughts about more solar battery. I'd love to do it, but it's soooo expensive and am having a hard time justifying the expense. I keep changing my mind about it. What does ultra rapid chargers charge per kWh in the UK? Here in Australia it costs 70c per kWh (around 37p /kWh) Our domestic power here costs 32c /kWh (17p).

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      G'day! Rapid chargers are a lot more expensive here. Typically 70p/kWh compared to charging at home that I've had as low as 11p/kWh (and can be even lower on some tariffs). Part of the problem is we pay 5% VAT on home energy, but rapids pay the full rate of 20%. Even then, that doesn't quite make up the huge difference, but it's a factor that doesn't help things. I'm lucky and charge up at home all the time. My only rapid experience was for this video - and that was an unncessary top up. Even when I did a recent 180 mile round trip (my latest video) I didn't need to rapid charge. Australia is now making huge leaps in EV adoption after years of being behind, not to mention solar (a no-brainer in your part of the world). I have a feeling you'll be way ahead of us before too long. It's not a competition, of course, just great to see things moving in the right direction. Thanks for watching and sending your thoughts.

    Nice video mate but sorry after 93k miles of hard taxi working on my leaf (sold it for the E niro 2 yes ago) my E pedal and brakes was performing as good as the 1st day I picked her up. Ps I think you'll find the main reason Nissan ditched the true one pedal driving (again without being pedantic its not one pedal driving unless it does what it's supposed to be ) and that's because the brake pads don't wear out it's a shame as if it had it we'd see many more on the roads😂 Cheers

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      You're quite right, technically it's not one pedal driving if it doesn't come to a complete stop. Since making this video I'm quite miffed that it doesn't do that. If you watch my later videos you'll find one where I had a Leaf as a courtesy car and was bowled over by the true one pedal driving. I'm a convert and am pretty disappointed the Ariya doesn't do it...

    Besides the cost analysis, was your heat pump heating your house comfortably compared to gas during the winter time?

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      Yes, in fact I'd go as far as to say that having a nice constant heat without the fluctuations you experience with gas has made it far more comfortable. When I had a gas boiler, I'd find my skin would crack in a few places during the winter. Painful! Since getting an ASHP the problem has gone away - that's over 2 winters now. I put it down to the level heat in the house rather than the up and down of heating with gas.

      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      Do you mean in the app? To be fair, the Nissan Connect app with the Ariay works pretty well and the charge updates immediately when you open the app, or pull down to refresh. The only thing is it logs you out unexpectedly every few weeks, but other than that it's pretty solid.

    How are you getting on with this Andy? I am actually using two DJI Osmo Action Cameras at the moment. Slightly more fiddly but good footage. I could do my own channel with moron drivers footage if I felt the need.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      I’m finding it good. The picture quality is excellent. The road footage in my most recent video about motorway driving in the EV was all from the dashcam. It seems to “lock” quite a bit of the footage on the SD card despite me turning the sensitivity right down so I have to periodically take the card out and clear it, but that’s not a great problem. It just sits on the windscreen doing its stuff and I hardly ever think about it so that’s probably a sign it’s doing its job. 😀

    Your comparing and old gas boiler 80% efficient New Gas boilers are 96% efficient What about the higher maintenance cost and the higher service cost if it break 🤔

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      Thanks for your question. Taking into account the losses in refinement and distribution before gas reaches your home, the overall efficiency of a gas boiler can’t be as high as you suggest. It doesn’t take into account the whole process. Even putting that to one side, a heat pump is in excess of 300% efficient (mine often exceeds 500%) so there’s really no comparison. The maintenance and servicing costs are not higher when you consider that a heat pump has fewer parts and a longer expected life span than a gas boiler. Finally, gas boilers contribute 14% to UK green house gas emissions and shorten life expectancies with their pollutants putting strain on the NHS. Surely it’s far better to have cheap, green, healthy heating systems in our homes. Thanks for watching.

    I can definitely relate to the nostalgia. Our family moved 300 miles away from where I grew up when I was 14. I've only been back a handful of times. The first time I returned (at the age of 20) all the houses and streets were tiny! The last time I went back, I brought my wife and two of my (at that time college-aged) children. The owners of our old house invited us in for a 'tour'. They had made some modifications and were thrilled as we walked through and I was able to describe how the house had originally looked. I'm notmore sure who was having more fun - me or the subsequent owners! At any rate, sorry to ramble on. Love your videos!

    I run the entire length of the M27 at least once a week and have found that there is often a difference in power use between going west and coming back east all due to the prevailing wind! A second factor is rain water on the road. But the biggest factor is top speed, I tend to trade a few minutes for the extra range and save time by not needing to stop to charge often.

      @@TheRamblyChannel I just feel I would lose too much automotive uitility by switching to EV. I'm someone who always needs the car to be ready to hit the road and do a long trip, night or day. The most I've driven in 24 hours for work was nearly 600 miles, charge stops would have been a job killer. One week in three I work night shifts, one weekend in three I'm on 48 hour callout. I have family a couple hundred miles away, who are elderly and may need me to go to help at the drop of the hat. When my Dad was passing away a few years ago I got a phonecall out of the blue saying "you had better hurry up and get here", I set off with half a tank of diesel and made the 240 mile trip with ease. I'm just waiting for more range I guess, but I don't know if I can live with slow home charging. The heavy weight for long range vehicles bothers me too

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      @@chrisbarron5861 That's interesting to read. I suspect you're not the only person with these kinds of perfecly understandable questions about the move to EV. It needs a change of mindset. When you get home, plug the car in to your home charger (you'd definitely need one). It takes a few seconds to plug in. When you go out, unplug and go. So much cheaper to run than an ICE car to the tune of hundreds of pounds per year. I've been through the same thing when my mother passed away and it required last minute hospital visits and the like, but I never had any problems as the car was always charged. Range isn't a problem if you plug in when you stop for a comfort break or to buy a coffee. Even 10 minutes on a rapid charger will chuck in a huge number of miles, especially if you buy an EV with an 800 volt architecture. Those long drives will feel a good deal nicer in a quiet EV without the noise and vibrations of a petrol or diesel engine. You raise fair points and you're not alone and it does require a leap of faith, but the large number of people who successfully switch shows how good it is. Just pick the correct car for your needs and off you go!

      @@TheRamblyChannel Thanks.I currently enjoy 800 miles range, which is helpful on long trips with 2 or 3 drivers int he car sharing the driving, such as when we visit European F1 Grand Prix circuits, or music festivals hundreds of miles away. I really, absolutely hate spending any time in motorway services, I always seem to lose a significant amount of money for not many goods or services ! I understanding the charging idea but take 2 weeks ago as the example, when I arrived home with an empty fuel tank, within 45 minutes were setting off on a 250 mile drive. There is just no time for an EV to charge in that situation. I'm keeping an eye on it for now, but it's going to be a while before I'm happy with the range and utility. Even if I had to charge for 4 hours at home, that's a fifth of the day gone, that I can't use the car for

      @TheRamblyChannel Місяць тому

      Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. There’s a button you can press on the front of the device that will “lock” the file and prevent it being overwritten but as it writes a new file every 3 mins (so lots of files per journey) it’s probably better to get a large storage card and then you won’t have to worry about that. You can also connect via an app and download clips to your phone although it’s not brilliant as if the camera turns itself off then the connection to the app drops. I tend to pop the card out and put it into my computer to get at the clips. Hope that helps! 😊
